The new Parks Division Director, Richard Thompson, has ordered Roundup to be used in all Santa Fe parks even though the City Ordinance specifies that only the IPM (Integrated Pest Management) Coordinator can approve of pesticide use. We have a strong IPM policy in Santa Fe. The present IPM Coordinator is Dick Fagerlund who is NOT in favor of using Roundup, although his boss Richard Thompson wants to usurp Fagerland's decision.
In case you are not familiar, Round Up has been linked through repeated scientific studies with concerning health issues for both pets and humans, particularly children.
City Councilor Patti Bushee has been alerted. She has been a strong advocate for no pesticides in the past and hopefully she can get this turned around, but in any case we need to pummel the city with phone calls of outrage. Up to now, the parks and land surrounding Santa Fe have been free of herbicides, making this city a safe haven for families, children and animals on city land. Mr. Thompson's "taking matters into his own hands" is an outrage and directly against the city's long standing IPM policy.
Please call the mayor Javier Gonzales at 955-6590 and ask him to stop this nonsense.
If you live within the City limits, please also call your City Councilors. The City Manager's office at 955-6848 has each Councilors phone number.
Please forward this notice to any of your contacts via Facebook, email or other means. Thank You.
